Oil-based paint collected for proper disposal Saturday, March 25

Oil-based paint only will be collected and properly disposed of on Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at the Rutherford County Recycle Center, 1140 Haley Road, Murfreesboro, TN 37130. This collection is for households only.

Paint is not accepted at the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collections. This is in compliance with standards set by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC).

Oil-based paint is considered minimally hazardous therefore it collected for proper disposal. Latex paint, also called acrylic paint, will NOT be collected at this or any other event since it is not actually a hazardous material. Instead it is a nuisance waste that should be dried at home before disposing of in the regular trash. If it is not dried before disposal it will leak and splatter onto roads and cars during transport to the landfill.

For more information on proper solidification methods please refer to the county website at www.rutherfordcountytn.gov/environmental and then click on the “Education” link. Flyers can also be mailed by calling 615 542-4633.

Refer to the label to determine if paint is either latex or oil-based. The clean up process for latex paint is just soap and water, but the clean up for oil-based paint, also referred to as alkyd, requires solvents to clean brushes and rollers.
