A great deal of progress was made during the third quarter on the project. Bell & Associates started things off by setting the steel girders for spans #2 and #3 on the new overpass. Gilley Construction Incorporated then installed the forms and tied the reinforcing steel for the bridge deck.
Civil Constructors has substantially completed the installation of the storm drainage pipe on the project. Bell also completed the curb and gutter along the left side of Broad Street and the parapet rail on the western bridge abutment. Hoover Incorporated performed milling and paving operations on the left side of Broad Street and placed base stone on the western bridge abutment. Last but certainly not least, Bell began placing concrete for the bridge deck. Concrete work on the deck will be complete during the third week of October.
The contractor intends to shift south bound traffic on Broad Street next to the new curb line on October 14 and 15. This will allow Hoover to proceed with milling and paving operations in the middle portion of the roadway.
The last quarter of this year will continue to be very busy. Civil will finish the subgrade on the eastern abutment and place topsoil on the slopes. In addition to the asphalt work on Broad Street, Hoover will also be placing base stone on the eastern bridge abutment and paving on Old Fort Parkway, Memorial Boulevard, and the side streets on our job. Kimberley Incorporated will finish the sidewalk and driveways on Broad Street between Lytle Creek and the Memorial intersection. Landscaping work will take place in various locations throughout the project. Other items of work include the completion of traffic signals at the Lytle and Memorial intersections, curb islands in the ramps, completion of overhead lighting, and permanent stripe.
The project is currently on schedule to wrap up at the end of this year. As always, motorists are urged to use caution, reduce speed, and be alert to changing road conditions in the construction zone.
