In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, all City of Murfreesboro offices, most recreational facilities, and senior services at Patterson Park Community Center will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018.
Rover, the City’s public transportation service, will not run on the federal holiday.
There will be no garbage pick-up on Monday, Jan.15, 2018. Monday’s garbage pick-up will be Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018. Tuesday’s garbage pick-up will be Wednesday, January 17, 2018.
All Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department facilities, except Adams Tennis Complex, will be closed. Adams will operate regular hours on MLK Jr. Day.
Old Fort and VA golf courses will be open on MLK Jr. Day. St. Clair Street Senior Center is closed Saturday, Jan. 13 and Monday, Jan. 15.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an annual federal holiday that celebrates the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. The American holiday honors the life and achievements of this influential civil rights leader. The Murfreesboro Lodge #12, Free and Accepted Masons, Bridgestone United Steel Workers and the Murfreesboro NAACP are participating groups in the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day March.
The March begins at Central Magnet School, 701 E. Main Street, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee with the line up at 11:30 a.m. and the march beginning promptly at Noon and ending at Patterson Park Community Center Pavilion.
Monday night starting at 6 p.m. in Tucker Theatre, the MTSU Office of Intercultural & Diversity Affairs will hold the candlelight vigil featuring Phil Darius Wallace and hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Wallace is a Memphis-based actor, writer and speaker known for his one-man shows about the lives of King and Frederick Douglass. The Flint, Michigan, native studied theater at the Interlochen (Michigan) Arts Academy and the Theatre Arts School at the State University of New York Purchase College in Westchester, New York.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is a Connection Point extracurricular activity for freshmen and other students.
City business offices will resume their regular hours of operation, which are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
