Storm Drain Labeling
By labeling storm drain inlets, you will help to keep the streams and rivers in Murfreesboro cleaner and thus to protect wildlife in and around the water. You do know that storm drains drain to streams and rivers, not to a wastewater treatment plant ? What goes down the drain ends up in the river.
Use the Drain Labeling Request form.
Use the Drain Labeling Request form to tell us who will do the labeling, when and where. We will process the request and provide you with materials and more detailed labeling instructions.
Who can perform the labeling?
Youth groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, neighborhood and watershed associations, 4H clubs, church groups, city agencies, to name a few. You can include children eight years old and above on your teams. For boys and girls ages 8-18, a parent/guardian must sign liability release statement.
What materials are needed to do the labeling?
When the City of Murfreesboro approves your labeling request, we will provide you with materials: maps, labels, glue, brushes, safety vests, gloves, traffic cones.
Where should we label?
You may want to label in your area. That’s okay, but we can also direct you to some of our priority areas for labeling; for instance, where we know there have been instances of dumping. We will have you avoid high volume, high-speed traffic areas.
What do we label?
Most of the labels will be placed on storm drain inlet backs. That’s the part of the inlet iron on the top of the curb. In some places, it may be necessary or better to place the label on the pavement immediately adjacent to a drain.
What about legal liabilities?
Labeling storm drains is not difficult. And your good common sense – particularly with respect to traffic and road awareness – is what you need for safety. The City will provide safety vests and orange traffic cones. In addition, you must complete and sign liability release forms in order to conduct the labeling.
Murfreesboro storm drain labeling
The storm drain labeling program was recommended to the Murfreesboro Storm Water Advisory Committee by the Stones River Watershed Association. After your project, we would like to recognize you before our Storm Water Advisory Committee and we will post a project report for your group on the City’s web site.
