In 2013, the Murfreesboro Criminal Investigation Division officially formed its own Special Victim’s Unit. Formerly known as the Domestic Violence Unit, this highly specialized unit is focused on the most sensitive areas of investigation. The Special Victim’s Unit caseload is partially generated through referrals from other agencies such as: the Department of Children Service and the Adult Protective Service. The Special Victim’s Unit also partners with the Domestic Violence Program and Sexual Assault Service of Rutherford County to serve victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Special Victim’s Unit detectives participate in, and are members of, several inter-agency coalitions such as; the Domestic Assault Response Team (DART), the Child Protective Investigative Team (CPIT), the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), the Vulnerable Adult Protective Investigative Team (VAPIT), the Child Fatality Review Team (CFRT), and the Rutherford Coalition Against Child Abuse (RCCACA). The detectives in this division typically work with the 16th District DA’s Office to prosecute incidents involving:
- Domestic violence
- Child abuse (sexual, physical, and neglect)
- Child death
- Sexual assault
- Rape
- Stalking
- Missing/runaway juveniles
- Vulnerable adult/elder abuse (sexual, physical, and neglect)
- Sex offender registration
