Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office has been quite busy Saturday with two fire investigations.
The first, located at 5009 Saint Ives Drive near the clubhouse in Berkshire Subdivision, was called in around 5:20 Saturday morning. Engine 5 arrived on scene to find the “turtle tile” or plastic lining around the basketball court on fire.
Crews extinguished the fire, but about half of the lining was damaged. Assistant Fire Marshal Tracy Summar was called to the scene to investigate. According to Summar, the fire is believed to be intentionally set and is under investigation at this time.
The second, located at 3419 Almar Knot Drive, came in just before 1:30 Saturday afternoon. When Ladder 9, Engine 5, and Rescue 7 arrived on scene there was light smoke showing from the second story of the home.
Crews entered the home to find a small fire in one of the upstairs bedrooms. They were able to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher. Though the bedroom suffered moderate heat and flame damage, the fire was contained to that one room, much in part due to the bedroom door being closed. “Having the bedroom door shut most likely saved this home,” said Summar. “It certainly kept the fire from getting out of hand before crews arrived on scene.”
In the initial investigation of the Almar Knot fire, it appears to be accidental; however, that investigation is ongoing.
There were no injuries associated with either incident.
