The City of Murfreesboro is proud to provide an on-going webpage project to inform the community of prominent figures behind the names of parks, roads, bridges, and memorials. While many residents may be familiar that the Doug Young Public Safety Training Center is named after former Vice Mayor and Councilmember Doug Young, other names featured through the community are less notable, especially to newcomers.
Who was John Bragg whose name resides on a highway to Woodbury? What did Baxter Ertis Hobgood do before his name appeared on the Elementary School in Murfreesboro? Who were Richard and Emma Siegel? Who is behind the name on Vaughn Street and where is Vaughn Street?
Visitors to the “History of Place” webpage can take a virtual tour of an interactive City map to learn about former mayors and community leaders who made a lasting impact on Murfreesboro. By clicking a tab on the map where the public infrastructure or amenity is located, webpage users are provided a photo and brief bio of the prominent figure.
The new webpage is a work in progress and the City invites the community to suggest other “not-so-understood” names to the Communications Department to be considered for inclusion on the page. Citizens can email or call 615-848-3245 for the Communications Department.
