Mayor Shane McFarland provides a look back at 2021 and a look ahead to 2022 on the latest edition of “The Insider.”  Mayor McFarland is celebrating his twentieth year with the City of Murfreesboro, including four years serving on the Murfreesboro Planning Commission. He was first elected to the City Council in 2006, then as the youngest Mayor in Murfreesboro history in 2014.

Mayor McFarland will be featured in a two-part podcast with Part 1 airing in early January and Part II later this month.  


This edition, Part 1, of “The Insider” with Mayor McFarland features: 


  • The FY 21-22 City Budget with the revenue growth from the Sales Tax and other revenue sources above projections.  
  • Murfreesboro’s explosive growth as #1 Boomtown.
  • Inflation and its impact on the cost of employees and fuel costs. 
  • Proceeds from the sale of the electric department, including plans in 2022 to change the City Charter and establish a Trust to manage funds. 
  • Economic development successes, including the Dec. 9, 2021, announcement by Legacy Sports Tennessee, downtown re-development, and Siegel Soccer Complex expansion.

Mayor McFarland is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University where he served as Student Body (SGA) President in 1995-96. Guiding the City’s growth has focused on downtown redevelopment, enhanced parks and recreation offerings, corporate recruitment, and state-of-the-art public safety facilities. McFarland is owner of Shane McFarland Construction, a custom residential and commercial construction firm. He is married to Ashely McFarland. The couple has three boys and attend World Outreach Church.
