[ARCHIVED] Driver accused of hitting officer with car arrested; passenger arrested for lying to police

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – (June 22, 2023) The driver who sped off during a traffic stop, striking and injuring an officer has been arrested.  One passenger was also arrested for lying to police.
 
 William Kress, 22, was taken into custody by Shelbyville Police on Wednesday.  Murfreesboro police investigators charged Kress with aggravated assault on a first responder, felony evading with substantial risk of injury or death, identity theft, resist stop, halt, frisk, and driving on a suspended license. 

Police determined that Carrie Champion, 22, gave information to deceive police.  Champion was arrested and charged with filing a false report. 

Kress is being held in the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on $37,500 bond. 

Champion was released on $3,500 bond.  

Both are scheduled to appear in Rutherford County General Sessions Court on August 21.

PREVIOUSLY RELEASED:

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – (June 21, 2023) The MPD officer hit by a car during a traffic stop has been released from the hospital overnight. 

The officer is a little sore but is doing well. 

The driver and passengers have all been identified. Charges are pending.
 
 The investigation continues.

 MURFREESBORO, Tenn.
 – (June 20, 2023) A MPD officer is injured after being struck by a car during a traffic stop Tuesday evening, June 20.  Officers are searching for the driver and two passengers.  

 

The injured officer was assisting another officer and a recruit on a traffic stop on Old Fort Pkwy. and Chaffin Place around 8:30 p.m.  The driver of the green 1997 Honda Civic sped away striking the officer who was standing on the passenger side. The office was taken to the hospital to be medically evaluated. He was alert and talking. 

The preliminary investigation indicates the driver and two of the passengers got out of the car on I-24 near the New Salem Hwy exit. A fourth passenger, a female, drove the car to the Joe B. Jackson Pkwy Walmart. She was detained by officers.  

Police have identified the male driver and the other male and female passengers. Officers continue searching for them Tuesday night. 

Deputies with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol are assisting with the search.
