MFRD Districts 1, 2, 9, Rescue 8, and several key staff members responded to a fatal multi-vehicle accident on I-24 approximately 500 yards from the Exit 81-A off ramp around 12:15 am June 13.
At least eight vehicles and two tractor trailers were involved in the incident according to Acting Shift Commander Jeff Day. Two vehicles became trapped under the two tractor trailers. Two passengers were extricated from one vehicle and the driver of another was also extricated.
One vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived on scene.
At this time, there are two confirmed fatalities. Names of the victims are not being released pending notification of next of kin. At least three victims were Lifeflighted from the scene, and several others were transported via ambulance to area hospitals.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol, Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department, Rutherford County EMS, and Murfreesboro Police Department all responded to the scene. Statements are expected to come from the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s spokesperson.
