Fortress Rosecrans Trailhead is just off Golf Lane inside Old Fort Park. Fortress Rosecrans Trail is a loop, with cross-connectors, that passes by several of the remaining sections of Fortress Rosecrans. From the greenway, a 0.2-mile spur starting just south of the West Fork Stones River in Old Fort Park and 0.4-mile spur from the Overall Street Trailhead lead to Fortress Rosecrans Trailhead.
Constructed by Union troops between January and June, 1863 (after the Battle of Stones River), Fortress Rosecrans was the largest enclosed earthen fortification built during the Civil War. As a supply depot, it played an important role in the Union Army's advance to Chattanooga. Fortress Rosecrans was abandoned in April 1866. It is now part of Stones River National Battlefield.
